Hello, First, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Cue:Balloons and Horns This was nearly a year ago that you wrote this, thowing down the gauntlet, as it were, and your words still ring true, like a Sun Ra tune from say, Sun Ra - Lanquidity - 1978. Although, as you rightly assert, big stars like Donna Summer mmight just get their due in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, since she's on the list now in 2013. Whether Donna's Rock'n'Roll (I think she's Disco, the great Diva of Disco, in fact) will be left to the Fickle Finger of Fate.
I am indeed intersted in the popular music of the 1920's and early 30's, having thankfully grown up in the appreciation of Jazz... Black Music. American Black Music. But say, music is music, and still, humans are humans. Time marches on, and guns and men with guns are still the rage, hopefully for good, but ... AW, let's get back to music.
Your complete profile (I thought that was a picture from the good side) said that you were a female from uh, was it England. Wonderful. Two of the last three movies I have watched have been War Horse, and Pride and Glory... just by chance, actually. The other was Durango...
But back to two facts. 1. Thank you so much for all your work, and dedication to the music of our time, however distant, we must dance to the music we hear, and you have given us, through archive.org, a wonderous feast of music to move by, or to dream by, dance by and know again. Thank you from all of the thousands, more or less, that will come to know Gus Arnheim or others via your fine archival effots. That's the "small print" that lead me here.
So, I raise a glass of California Merlot, instead of bubbly champers or cava, tonight, and wish you the very best. You are a muse of the past escapades, past lives drifting by on the dance floor, and the hotel rooms, and living rooms of the past generations. Your wallpaper speaks of taste and intelligence, and you might be sharp and smart, like Ms. Dorothy Parker, not "sweet" or "sappy."
However this little card of thanks finds you, I wish you love, and leave you with this thought. If even a few souls find this site, and enjoy this cultural lifeblood, then it's been worth it. Love is always its own reward.
Oh, and a question: Was it Binnie Hale - YOU'RE BLASE 1932 - who sang on Gus Arnheim's rendition of that tune, or was her 1932 recording another version? I love that tune. So me.
